Integrative Medicine and Acupuncture
Clinical Associate Tufts Medical School
During residency in family medicine, I became frustrated by the culture of pharmaceuticals as first-line and felt there was much more to healing than the prescription pad. I was fortunate to participate in the Integrative Medicine program at Arizona during my residency and pursue an experiential fellowship at Maine Medical Center, doing outpatient integrative medicine consults. During that fellowship year, I also became licensed in acupuncture for physicians through Joseph Helms Medical Acupuncture course. Following completion of the fellowship, I decided to pursue integrative medicine and acupuncture in the inpatient setting at Maine Medical Center, where integrative medicine was still absent from the standard of care. My goal is to provide those sickest in our community with access to multiple healing modalities including acupuncture, osteopathic manipulation, botanical medicine, dietary supplements, mind-body therapies and nutritional & lifestyle recommendations. In the inpatient setting, patients are often motivated to make big lifestyle changes due to a new or worsening diagnosis and I have found it to be a great time to introduce the concepts of integrative medicine. Additionally, I have worked hard to provide evidence-based approaches that are agreeable to the specialists and have found education of the inpatient physicians and nursing staff to be a large part of what I do.
